Government websites and policies

• Department of Health website has relevant resources and tools that are focused on both Palliative care and Aged Care. Some documents relating to government policy are also listed below and you can find more on the palliAGED Policy Timeline
   
  • Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) User Guide 2017
  • Aged Care Education and Training Incentive Program (ACETI) provides incentive payments to eligible aged care workers who undertake specified education and training program
  • Clinical practice guidelines and principles of care for people with dementia (436kb pdf) Recommendations by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia; 2016 Feb.
  • Decision-making tool: Supporting a restraint free environment in residential aged care. This is a document has been developed to assist staff and management working in residential aged care setting to make informed decisions in relation to the use or non use of restraint, in responding to behaviours of concern.
  • Guiding principles for medication management in residential aged care facilities – 2012
  • Local Palliative Care grants and the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute produced the Key elements of a Palliative approach for People with Severe and End Stage Dementia (1.31MB pdf) document

• Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) which coordinates national improvements in safety and quality in health care across Australia
• Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission provides information on promoting quality, innovation and improvement of service in aged care. This organisation also offers short courses and workshops for further professional development

National palliative care program

National Palliative Care Program aims to improve access to and quality of palliative care and is administrated through the Department of Health

• Ageing Better Oral Health in Residential Care Training project was completed in 2010
• Dementia Centre for Research Collaboration (DCRC) website is a hub of information regarding research programs and reports specific to dementia
• Department of Health Local Palliative Care Grant Round 5 has funded the Partnership in Palliative Care Australia project which has produced the Affirming Life: What is a palliative approach – a guide for family and friends with loved ones in aged care and explains palliative care in an Australian Residential Aged Care setting
• ELDAC provides information, guidance, and resources to health professionals and aged care workers to support palliative care and advance care planning to improve the care of older Australians
• Key Elements of a Palliative Approach for People with Severe and End Stage Dementia (1.31MB pdf) is document that was developed by a collaboration between Alzheimer’s Australia WA and Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI)
• palliAGED for evidence-based guidance, this incorporates and updates the evidence-based information previously contained in the Guidelines for a Palliative Approach in Residential Aged Care (APRAC) and the Guidelines for a Palliative Approach for Aged Care in the Community Setting (COMPAC).

• Australian Human Rights Commission has produced a working paper where it argues that quality care can only be achieved when there is understanding and recognition of the human rights of the care recipients

• Australian Journal of Rural Health is available online and provides publications on the current research around regional and rural health issues
• Australasian Journal on Ageing is a peer reviewed journal, which publishes original work in any area of gerontology and geriatric medicine.
• Australian Health Review explores health policy and management including healthcare delivery systems, clinical programs, and health financing.
• Australian Journal of Advanced Nursing aims to provide a vehicle for nurses to publish original research and scholarly papers about all areas of nursing
• The Rural and Remote Health Journal carries many articles on Indigenous health care
