Pharmacists Supporting People with their Grief and Bereavement

Topic

Grief and bereavement in the community

Content

PSA offers an online learning module for pharmacists on supporting people with their grief and bereavement. The module includes:

  • Recognising signs and symptoms
  • Defining grief disorders and identifying risk factors
  • Describing communication strategies for responding to those who are grieving
  • The contemporary evidence base for supporting grief and grief disorders
  • Referral pathways for grief support and specialist bereavement services.

Pharmacists and pharmacy assistants will often have contact with people in the first weeks and months after a loss when they return medicines or pursue their own health care. Pharmacists can support bereaved people, help identify people who may be suffering prolonged and complex grief, and provide advice for where they might go for help with grief.
